Twitter news chat hashtag as a reporting tool

Texas Southern University journalism students are utilizing the social website Twitter as a news reporting tool.

Under the hashtag "#Twitternewschat", students can "tweet" news headlines for the world to read.

The hashtag was created by journalism professor Serbino Sandifer-Walker as a way for her students to integrate New Media with their reporting skills.

"The students are required to tweet headlines every week under the hashtag," said the professor. "It lets me know if they are really paying attention to the news."

Many news sources such as the Houston Chronicle, CNN, and Fox News are currently using Twitter to reach readers with their news.

"No one really wants to read a full news story anymore," said senior Ndukaku Okereke. "Readers just want the headlines now a days."

"The hashtag also teaches students how to write headlines and how to be timely when it comes to reporting news," said Sandifer-Walker.

The hashtag is available for all Twitter users and can be viewed at anytime on the internet.
